The massive book-so big it is usually published in the trilogy format most readers know-almost single-handedly created a huge appetite for high fantasy books during the 1960s which, though perhaps not as artistically valuable as literary fiction, have probably had more popular impact over the last forty or so years than most pantheons of modern literature. Tolkien's seminal fantasy epic, The Lord of the Rings, cannot be overvalued.
